If there was ever a brownie recipe that got a standing ovation, this might be it. Combining peanut butter and chocolate tends to do that to people. I mean, it isn’t a classic flavor combo for nothing…and this is coming from a girl who just ate a spoonful of peanut butter with chocolate chips on it for an afternoon sweet treat. I mean I am kinda-sorta known for some pretty epic chocolate-peanut butter desserts like Peanut Butter Balls, Buckeye Brownie Cookies, and Peanut Butter Cup Brownie Cheesecake to name a few!
What Are Buckeyes?
Buckeyes are popular in Ohio, as the Buckeye is the state tree! This brownie recipe is a spin on Buckeye Balls which are peanut butter balls that are only partially dipped in chocolate, leaving the peanut butter showing on the top. That way they look like the nuts from a Buckeye tree.
So long story short, this brownie recipe is just a fun spin on Buckeye Candy turning them into a rich, chewy, fudgy peanut butter and chocolate brownie!
How Do You Make Buckeye Brownies?
I started this recipe with a boxed brownie mix to make things easy. You could certainly use a brownie recipe from scratch if you prefer, just make sure the recipe is supposed to be baked in a 9×13 pan and the batter is on the thick side so you have enough brownie batter to hold the peanut butter filling.
- Once you’ve made your brownie batter, stir in some chopped peanuts to give a little extra crunch. You can leave the chopped peanuts out if you don’t like nuts in your brownies, no problem!
- Then mix together some peanut butter and sweetened condensed milk. This makes a magic peanut butter filling.
- Press half the brownie batter into a greased 9×13 pan, and then pour the peanut butter filling on top of that! Drop the remaining brownie batter onto the filling and lightly press it in. When these bake they will look pretty and marbled on top!
- Bake them for about 25 minutes until the edges are set, and then let them cool!
Can You Freeze These Brownies?
Yes, absolutely! Buckeye Brownies can easily be frozen. Let them cool completely, and you can freeze them in the pan, or cut them into bars and freeze them like that. Just make sure they are airtight and they will be great for up to a month! Let them thaw out at room temperature for eating.
- If you freeze them in bars, just place them in a flat layer in a zip-top bag, with a piece of parchment paper separating the stacks. Or you can also freeze them in a large plastic container.
- If you choose to freeze them in the pan, allow them to cool and cover the pan in foil. Cut them after they have thawed out!

These brownies come together so quickly, but are really a showstopper! The thick peanut butter filling sandwiched in between the two brownie layers is sweet and creamy. And like I said before, you can absolutely omit the chopped peanuts if you don’t want any crunch.

These Chocolate and Peanut Butter Brownies are easy and delicious!
Ingredients
- 1 box (18.5-ounce) Brownie Mix
- 2 eggs
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- 3/4 cup coarsely chopped peanuts
- 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk)
- 1/2 cup peanut butter
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a 9×13 pan with foil and coat with nonstick spray. Set aside.
- In the bowl of your stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment mix the brownie mix, oil and eggs on medium speed until smooth.
- Stir in the chopped peanuts.
- Divide batter in half and press half the batter into bottom of prepared pan (it will be a thin layer) and set the other half to the side.
- In a large bowl combine the peanut butter and sweetened condensed milk with whisk.
- Pour peanut butter mixture over the bottom layer of the brownie.
- Drop the remaining brownie mix on top of the peanut butter layer, pressing each spoonful lightly into peanut butter.
- Bake for 25 minutes until just set.
- Let cool completely before cutting into squares.

If I want to use homemade brownie mix, do I also add eggs and oil, or is that added because the recipe calls for box mix? Thanks! Cant wait to try the recipe!
I made these today and they’re delicious. Easy to make and I got lots of compliments. Next time I’ll take a little bit more care to really make sure I reserve enough brownie batter after the first pour to cover the top and not stress if I can’t perfectly spread the base layer. I ran a little short for the final layer and too much of the peanut butter mixture showed through with a baked, crepey texture. Of course I was probably the only person who cared at all but you know how self-critical us bakers are. Still a hit and I’m keeping the recipe!
